"Great Northern" Tittabawassee River
For the avid paddler looking for something a little different we offer The “Great Northern” Tittabawassee River
as another beautiful relaxing river to enjoy in the area for a canoe/kayak trip. The Tittabawassee River is damned
up here to create Smallwood Lake so it is wider and a slow current. It is a beautiful trip and there are several Bald
Eagle nests along the way. Bring a fold up tent chair, find a sand bar in the river and kick back with some
refreshments and good friends. This river is wide and very realxing and is 5-30' deep. Weekdays are best as there
are very few boaters on the river. Keep in mind some of the AuSable Canoe racers practice on this streach of
river/lake. We can drop you off for a 2 hour, 4 hour, full day or overnight trip ending back at our home location at M-
61 and M-30. These trips are considered beginner/intermediate because they entail being on a wider/deeper river
with an occasional power boat. The 2 hour or 4 hour day trip starts just below Secord Lake Dam and the full day trip
starts at M-30 and Richie Rd. (the full day trip entails portaging downhill around the fairly large Secord Lake dam).
With either trip you would finnish by canoeing back to our dock at our home location at M-61 and M-30.
Many fishermen canoe this river renowned for its bass. This would be considered a very relaxing, easy going
trip.
No tubes on this river as it is damned up at one point and the current is slow moving.
This river is especially nice during the week when there is minimal activity on the river.
About The Tittabawassee River
The Tittabawassee River is the 8th longest river in Michigan.
Secord Lake is theTittabawassee River that is damned up and it flows into Smallwood Lake (Tittabawassee River
damned up) which then flows into Wixom Lake (Tittabawassee River damned up) which then flows into Sanford Lake
(Tittabawassee River damned up) which then later flows thru Midland Michigan into the Saginaw River which flows
into Lake Huron.
It is technically possible (although an extremely long ways) to canoe just south of West Branch all the way down to
Lake Huron (Bay City area) portaging around 4 large dams. This is the extent of this great river system.
